Case Study - Chicago Mobile Makers

Impaktfel not only helped me learn how to use QBO efficiently, but they also helped me understand my past, present, and future financials. I wouldn’t have been able to make budget and revenue goals for my company without their guidance.

Growing the Vision

Chicago Mobile Makers (CMM) makes design and construction education more accessible to underrepresented Chicago youth. The organization creates programming that encourages youth to become advocates and change makers in their own communities through design focused skill-building workshops.

Executive Director, Maya Bird-Murphy reached out to Impaktfel, seeking accounting and financial help as she looked to scale her impact in the Chicago community.

Ongoing Strategic Support

As a small non-profit organization, CMM was using QuickBooks Online (QBO) as its accounting & financial reporting platform, but was struggling to leverage it to make good financial decisions. Unfamiliar with accounting operations, Maya, CMM’s founder and executive director, connected with Impaktfel to assist with building out a solid structure within QBO and to help set up a reporting dashboard. The result? Organized financial data and training resources to help Maya produce accurate, up-to-date and automated financial reports for grant submissions, and real-time data for making good financial decisions.

A big part of CMM’s vision is to deliver workshops remotely in communities of need. So, of course building a mobile workshop was necessary to achieve their vision! To do that, they needed a van designed specifically for conducting workshops, with design tools at the ready to travel wherever and whenever they need. With a solid grounding in their financial status from previous work, we helped CMM develop a capital budget and fundraising strategy to achieve their vision. Their fundraising efforts included a construction kick-off party, combined with targeted donor outreach, and their first ever crowdfunding campaign through Indiegogo. The result? CMM was able to raise funding for the 1st phase of the mobile workshop project and are now well on their way to launching it in the coming year!

Now, with QBO setup, CMM has the operational reporting, capital budgeting, and a more complete picture of their organization’s financial health. They also have templated financial reports and budgets ready for use in grant funding applications and year end form 990 submissions. And, CMM is also well on their way to providing more free and low-cost youth workshops, encompassing design, architecture, digital fabrication, basic construction, and placemaking around Chicago!
